These are substances that, due to their chemical action, damage the epithelial tissue of the skin and mucous membranes when they come into contact with them, or that, in the event of a leak, may cause damage to other goods or means of transport or destroy them, which may give rise to other dangers. It is also applied to materials that only produce a corrosive liquid when in contact with water or that, with the natural humidity of the air, produce corrosive vapours or mists. The term corrosive does not determine a specific type of products that possess certain common structural characteristics, chemical or reactive. There are liquids, gases and other solids. Some are acids, others are bases and corrosive salts. Most of them are inorganic in nature, but there are also organic ones. The assignment to the packing groups is based on the experience gained from accidental exposures, in addition to the criteria set out below. Total destruction of skin tissue:
Packing Group I: after exposure to the corrosive matter of 3 minutes or less and an observation period of 60 minutes.
Packing Group II: after exposure to corrosive matter of between 3 minutes and 60 minutes and an observation period of 14 days.
Packaging Group III: exposure to corrosive matter of between 60 minutes and 4 hours, with an observation period of more than 14 days.
