ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a global federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing international standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on said committee. International organizations, public and private, in coordination with ISO, also participate in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

The main task of the technical committees is to prepare International Standards.

ISO 19011 has been prepared jointly by Technical Committee ISO/TC 176, Quality Management and Assurance, Subcommittee 3, Supporting Technologies and Technical Committee ISO/TC 207 Environmental Management, Subcommittee 2, Environmental Audit and Environmental Investigations related.
